Chapter Nine
The Royal Refuge was generally a quiet hotel. Usually only those who held rank within the pack could afford the outrageous cost to spend a night there. The hotel was adorned in extravagant, imported white washed marble. The outside was decorated with an impressive marble fountain, multiple ancient style pillars and large white tiles. The lobby had the same design style, the white almost blinding.
On the evening of the blue moon, the outside pillars shined brightly with a purple hue from the shimmering spotlights, standing out in the night sky. The entrance was packed with people, mostly betas from the press and civilians that hoped to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrity. A carpet runway was strewn from the footpath, splitting off into two around the fountain, and joining again by the gilded turnstile doorway.
Lucas drove through the busy city streets in his best business suit. He felt rather ridiculous riding in a suit, but he had no choice. It was either ride in his fancy getup, or take the train. And he didn’t want to take his future mate home on a dingy subway the morning after the deed was done. The alpha parked on a side street, away from the bustling crowd. His hands trembled as he took the keys out of the ignition. He stood, but didn’t have the drive to move himself forward.
This is for the best. It is what is expected of me. It is an honor.
With an exasperated sigh, Lucas forced himself to take a step forward, forward to the bolstering crowds and his destiny.
The crowd buzzed and filled the area with a bombardment of photo shots, almost blinding whoever happened to be walking down the carpet toward the lobby. A guard stood by the front, ensuring only those with a ticket were allowed the privilege to walk down the runway. Limousines pulled up at the entrance of the runway, letting out well dressed, and likely more affluent, alphas. While making his way to the entrance, Lucas overheard one of the interviews taking place in the line.
“Besides, the director said it would help me act out the role better if I actually experienced it.”
“Oh come on now, did he really say that? You two make the hottest TV sex scenes ever! Why are you here anyway? What happened to that guy you mentioned a month back, Greg or something? The rumors were that…”
The interviewee looked sort of similar to Lucas, but he did not care enough to stick around to find out who it was. Probably famous to the betas and maybe some omegas, but alphas generally don’t care about such trivial matters, especially not Lucas.
As he looked around, Lucas noticed that just about every alpha around held some form of fame. Yet there was only one alpha famous enough in the vicinity that Lucas wanted to converse with. The current CEO of Chompers. But that was only because Lucas wanted to say thanks for providing many of his calorie-loaded meals. Many
